Simple familiar

Routine procedures with an obvious method. Full marks here is a question of fluency and speed, not insight — so this tier is drilled until it is automatic.

Complex familiar

Several steps, all of them recognisable, with the information you need clearly identifiable. Trained by sequencing known skills under time pressure.

Complex unfamiliar

The procedure is not obvious and you have not met the context before. This is the tier that separates a high result from full marks, and it needs genuinely novel problems.

Exact by construction

Answers are computed with exact arithmetic rather than floating point, so surds, exact trigonometric values and complex numbers stay exact all the way to the page — which is what Paper 1 demands, since you sit it without a calculator.
